Washington, DC, July 8, 2021 – The SmarterSafer Coalition released the following statement on its priorities for Congress in relation to infrastructure legislation:
“The SmarterSafer Coalition supports Congressional efforts to improve the nation’s infrastructure and urges legislators to balance environmental protection with better stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”
Specifically, SmarterSafer encourages the passage of an infrastructure package that addresses climate risk and promotes disaster-resilient engineering, green building, and risk-transfer opportunities. By encouraging pre-disaster mitigation, we can save taxpayers $6 for every $1 spent on investing in disaster mitigation now, which ultimately encourages economic growth and more secure, prosperous communities.
As climate change and its related natural disasters intensify, Congress must continue to be proactive and dedicated to crafting a multifaceted infrastructure package that will protect communities, and more importantly, the people within them. An infrastructure package will pave the way for further developments to create a stronger and more resilient American society.
SmarterSafer.org is a national coalition made up of a diverse chorus of voices united in favor of environmentally responsible, fiscally sound approaches to natural catastrophe policy that promote public safety. SmarterSafer members include taxpayer advocates, environmental groups, insurance interests, housing organizations, and mitigation advocates.
